Ring Sølje Oxidized Silver

Sølje is the national jewelry of Norway.
This lacy filigree work in sterling silver was developed in the mid 18th century, a result of the rococo influences that swept through Europe at that time.
At the same time a measure of prosperity came to Norway and the ornamentation of formal clothing (including jewelry) became more ornate. Before this time it was primarily only affordable to royalty.
As with rosemaling, each isolated valley of Norway developed its own distinct bunad (national costume) and its accompanying jewelry. Of course, today we enjoy this delicate jewelry even when it’s not worn with a bunad.
It is a link with the heritage of the “old country” for some. For others it is enjoyed purely for its fine detail and craftsmanship.
